After watching the documentary film of Ai
Weiwei, a Chinese artist and activist “Never Sorry” it reminded me of a
politics situation in my country, Thailand. We share the same problems that a
power of a government take away ‘freedom of speech’ from us, I found it is so
ironic to call ourselves a democracy country.
Some parts of this film are irritating to watch but I understand that true story might be cruel than you
have ever imagined. The film shows us how his works relate to the society and
how powerful the message is sending out to people in a global level. In my
opinion, I think he is clever enough to use social media as a communication
tool because not so many artists are online most of the time and keep
updating their life especially using twitter. He is brave and aggressive in the same
time to challenge his powerful government. Although his action must have a
price to pay, he is still standing for something he believes in.
I select “Study in Perspective” as one of a
work that represent Ai Weiwei, it is a series of photographs with his middle
finger raised toward Tiananmen Square, the Eiffel Tower, the White House and
other famous places around the world. It demonstrates a protestation to power
of politics and cultures. I like this series of his work because of his
sarcastically sense of humor and an interesting aspect in anti-power.
